As you no doubt know, it isn't as much about quantity as it is about quality and quality isn't measured by what we are doing with our children so much as that we are giving them our undivided attention when we are doing it. What a great project to exercise that on with Jessica. You'll have to share all the actual results with us when it is all said and done.

Herman, I cannot imagine the challenge of raising a family and shepparding a church!

Thank you for the encouragement. I do not really have the time for an extra activity but I know I need to make the time.

James, all thumbs up for this post!
There is nothing of greater value than spending time with your kids!
As a pastor I had for too long a time put my congregation before my family, thinking that God expected it from me! In the end God had to stop me, with my youngest son derailing terribly!
Yet God heard my wife and my pleading and humbly admitting our mistakes. And God completely turned him around! He is assisting us in our ministry helping families struggling with a loved one in drugs or some other addiction.
Time spent with your kids is the most valuable!

Yeah, I try to take that stance with my kids now. I am A LOT more concerned with what the song says over what it sounds like.

Luckily none of my daughters like 'scream-o' music or there would be a problem, lol.

Thanks for the comment.

I once faced a ban on rock music as well, about ten years before you, based on it's potential degrading influence.
Upon quoting some upbeat lyrics for them (from "Hold Your Head Up" by Argent) my parents decided I might be able to discern the good from the bad. The ban was lifted.

I've been contemplating lyrics ever since.

Hi James

One other and related vital rule is:

Do what you say you are going to do.

Everytime that I have violated this rule, either in business or my personal life, it has caused serious problems.

Now before I promise to somebody, that I am going to do something I ask myself: Am I going to say this just to temporarily appease somebody or am I really committed to doing it?.

Quite often I determine that my promise would be either appeasement or procrastination. Then I keep my mouth shut. Wish I had learned this earlier in my life.

That had to be a bit of a shock! Not something you would think to hear at a secular college. Have fun with A&P. I enjoyed it very much when I took it, although it also stressed me out learning about how delicate a balance our bodies have to keep in order to be healthy. We are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made.

Good stuff. Couldn't agree more. For me it is boring to actually *write* a post without including an image of some sort. I've sadly used less personal images because my camera broke several months back. I hope to remedy that later in the summer, even if it means borrowing Tori's camera more often.

Glad to see my web guru already had "full text" in my Wordpress options. ;)

Congrats on the increase in traffic. I've enjoyed the more expanded subject matter on the site.

James, I just love this post and agree that God sometimes have much more in stall for us than we could ever think of. (Eph 3:20-21) With a schedule that took me away from home almost every evening, we started to have our family devotional hour every morning, and it was such a delight.
By the way, my son asked me the other day if I knew why God started His days at sunset. I didn't know. Then he pointed out that God actually says: "This is a new day, come and rest and spend some time with your family and have a good restful sleep. Then you are ready to face the troubles left for the last few hours of the day before I give you a new day, starting with rest again!" I just loved it!
God bless,
Herman

That's really cool, and kudos to you for sticking with it over the last couple of weeks.

Actually I would add to your number 1 point that not all benefits of spiritual activities are ONLY spiritual. I think the whole thing is cyclical and interrelated. I believe those benefits like more family time or any other benefits in the physical realm also benefit us spiritually and that each just build on the other. Your point is so true. We not only get more benefits out of putting God first and out of obedience than we would initially think but those benefits spill over into each part of our lives. It is an awe-inspiring thing to have those moments when we realize and truly "get" that we are spiritual, physical and mental/emotional beings and that these things are so tied together. The new-agers get it partially right although they miss the mark. There is a benefit to having balance between the parts of our being as God created them all, but we get that balance through putting Him first and embracing all the parts of our lives.

Isn't it great when you don't try to lead by example and then actually lead by example? Too cool.

I started my own morning routine today which involves getting up and doing just a bit of exercise plus breakfast to start my day. I've once again went through the try meds and then have to get off meds for my cholesterol. Each time the doc puts me on something she has to take me right off because my lipid levels spike. So now I need to try to get this under control by nutrition and exercise. Went to bed at 10:30 last night (early for me) and got up an hour early this morning. I feel great. I'll try to remember this feeling for days when it is rough.

And before I sign off, I wanted to share this link with you. Your evangelism has spread once again:

Hi James!

Like a good sci-fi there is a nasty sting at the end. I just love is!
Yes, if everything just went perfect, where would science be? It is exactly because of so many mistakes that there are so many new inventions and progress!

God bless!

I appreciate that Eddie!

I was thinking yesterday. The phrase: "If it ain't broke don't fix it" does not really apply to churches. We should be constantly fixing and working on our ministry. It should never grow stagnant. Especially in a society that gets bored easily.

You are very perceptive Dave!

I try to shoose images that have some kind of symbolic meaning.

Sometimes I feel like a rusty pipe that doesn't want to move. It takes a strong arm and a tough wrench to get me moving.

"Imagine the trouble I could get myself into if I was not correctable."

James, this is a very simple yet profound statement. Most of the problems in the world are caused by people who are not "correctable".

I wonder if you chose the picture of the pipe wrench because it simply looked cool or it was somehow symbolic of how 'wrenching" it is for some of us find it to be corrected or to correct ourselves.

Its quite a deep blog....I think there may be a poet/philospher inside of you trying to emerge!

James, this is so true. We often look at Scripture in one direction, not taking into account the full consequences of the "three fingers pointing back"
God bless with the reading of Scripture and Prayers.

That's right James. Usually, I have the yearly goals written out by then....and have talked some about it. But...we review the past year....and review plans for the next year on this end of the year 'get away'. Those get aways are very valuable times for Steph and me....and we make sure and have some fun, relaxing time as well on those trips :)

Hi Raun -
I've had this problem as well. One of the ways I've helped deal with this is to put these goals somewhere that I can see them every day. For me...it's on my computer where I write in my prayer journal. Where could you put those goals to keep an eye on them? My wife likes to print them and put them on the refrigerator :)
Enjoying the discussion here guys :)

Thanks for chiming in, Brent. Unfortunately, I've been pretty bad at creating goals. I'm good at making lists, however once written, I have a habit of not looking at them again. I'm trying to fix that issue and the Current Hard Work list has kept me on my toes. I'm leaning toward putting my longer term goals online for this reason.

Hi Folks -
I'm in agreement in keeping the longer term and day to day goals separate. Steph and I have a long-term goals document (contains everything over several years). Then, we've got a working document with all the goals from the current year that we look at every few weeks...and update it. At the end of each year, we create a new working document (often w/ the same areas of focus - spiritual, relational, vocational, financial, etc) but with different/updated goals for the next year.

How do you guys keep track of your goals day to day? Online? Paper? Something else?

James - appreciate your openness and honesty sharing about your struggle w/ quiet times/Bible Study through the years. Very glad to hear you've got a goal to really prioritize those quiet times this year. I fully believe that our strength to do anything stems from staying connected with God. Eager to hear how your new habit affects all areas of your life in 2012 :)

My chat with Pastor Jack was a good one, Carl.

We talked about the 'pray without ceasing' idea and how it is easy to use that concept to neglect intimate one-on-one prayer time with God.

Yes, I can pray while driving my car down the road but I should never consider that as a replacement for quiet prayer in a room alone.

The more I find my prayer time being while I drive down the road the lower my bible reading time gets. In my life prayer and bible reading to together.

This is an area I am neglectful in as well. Every week I leave church aglow with the passion of a life lived for Christ only to spend much of my week ignoring Bible reading and prayer. Now I pray all the time, but I need to be spending time actually sitting quietly and listening as well rather than having a constant one-sided conversation with the Lord. I neglect that all the time and it is sad. It is easy to then feel guilty about it, much harder to turn that feeling into action.

I commend you on your goals, I'm trying to do the same my friend.

Good idea! Let's get Brent involved. I guess what I'm thinking is that the long term goals should be in their own place (whether online or off, but written down either way) and the steps toward the goals should be on the Current Hard Work list. Those tasks should probably be granular enough to be able to complete them in 90 days. I think the fog is starting to lift. :)

That's a good question, Raun.

I would like to think that any long term goal could be started on the 90 day HWN list. I am using the power of our community to get myself started on this new habit. I certainly plan on continuing the habit for a long time; I won't quit just because it is off the list after 90 days.

Some items, like your doors, naturally fall off any and all lists once they are complete.

In my mind long term goals change with our lives. I want to get my master's in nursing but I am open to the idea that life changes and it may never happen. Still, the idea is out there 'in the clouds' as a possibility. All the steps in between will most likely make it to my HWN list.

Brent Green is awesome at this kind of stuff. I'm going to drag him in here to give us his feedback!

That's a good addition to your list. It is definitely a challenge. I've been playing with the idea of posting some longer term goals. I don't think they belong on the Current Hard Work list, but I think they should be somewhere. I also don't want a bunch of disjointed lists all over the place. Any suggestions for how to work with this?

I have never been much of a journal writer. Doing this once a week is all I can handle.

This morning felt great. I even had time to sit with my youngest before leaving for work.

I started a 21 day study on Character using Youversion. Pretty good so far.

This is probably where I struggle the most as well. I am trying to get up in the morning and read my Bible before getting out of bed. It has been an interesting experience that I hope to continue. I'd like to add journalling and more prayer as well.

Thanks, Liz.

We are years overdue for some family time out of town. I am thankful that we will be able to do that this year.

It feels good to be able to have travels planned and some vacation time doesn't it. That has been one of the things that I have been very thankful for this year is all the travel we have done, and now it is even easier to do. Enjoy your journeys!

This is a great post, James. I can tell, by the content of your last paragraph, that you are really looking forward to the serenity of routine. Sometimes that is just what the doctor ordered. Or nurse. Either way. :)

Sorry to hear you closed your business, but glad things are looking better. Nursing is an honorable profession, and the world needs good nurses.

Love your comment about being a specialist in a world that wants cheap. Made me think of big box stores. Nobody wants one pair of high quality shoes that fit well and will last; they want a closet full of crappy shoes from Mega-shoe-mart. Wal-Mart is the crowning glory of a nation that wants a whole lot of cheap: quality and price.

Best of luck to you!

It took us more than a few minutes to get over the price shock.

We decided to do what Christie and Derek wanted us to do.

I am so glad we did. It was a great time!

I'm so glad you guys got to do that. Mary got gift certificates there a few years back and we went and took Tori and Alyssa. The food was really good and we enjoyed it a lot. Fun atmosphere there. I'd love to go and spend hours there chatting but at this point wouldn't be wanting to spend that kind of money. It is wonderful that you got to go guilt free.

Amen, James! At our house, the "secret code" is "Let's go get coffee." We rarely do it, but we both know that when we go get coffee, it's going to take a while and we're going to talk about something.

Sometimes it's a bit like an intervention. Other times, it is just because we've both been too busy to spend much time together.

I usually think of waiting for a table to be part of the dining experience. Why do you have to wait to be seated to engage in the conversation? It's a missed opportunity.

Thank you for this testimony on God's deliverance from depression.

I had a similar experience with depression when I had been severely under attack while pastoring a church in an extremely racist town in the high days of "apartheid" in the eighties.
Looking back i can only thank God for healing me from depression in such a way that I could help many others afterwards.

Your three stages are so important and true!

God bless

James, Thank you so much for this openhearted post.

In my life I have experienced so much of what you wrote about, especially stereotyping people. It is quite an alarming discovery to make in one's own life. Here in South Africa where I grew up during the extreme years of segregation with a policy of Separate Development, commonly known as "apartheid" all different groups were stereotyped, the Greeks, the Italians, the Portuguese, the Afrikaners and the nine different African nations all living apart from one another in one country! Even today it is difficult to rid oneself from such ideas. But I am working on it. Your post gave me some hope again and led to new introspection. Thank you.

God bless, and have a Christ-filled 2012!
